Abstract

548,558. Emulsions. DOUGLAS, G. T., MOILLIET, J. L., TODD, W., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. April 12, 1941, No. 3360. [Class 1 (i)] [Also in Group IV] Pigmented water in lacquer emulsions for printing textile fabrics have as a solution of polyvinyl chloride in a volatile, substantially water-insoluble organic liquid with or without a plasticiser. Specified pigments are azo pigments, metal salts of nitroso-#-naphthol, phthalocyanines, water-insoluble vat dyes and inorganic pigments such as iron oxides, chrome yellows, titanium dioxide and lithopone. Specified organic liquids are cyclohexanone. methylcyclohexanone, ethylene dichloride, butyl and amyl acetates and mixtures of acetone with benzene, toluene, xylene or solvent naphtha, of cyclohexanone with solvent naphtha, butyl acetate or decahydronaphthalene, of amyl acetate with xylene, of solvent naphtha with ethyl, butyl or amyl acetate and of cyclohexanone with solvent naphtha and decahydronaphthalene. Specified plasticisers are tricresyl phosphate and dibutyl phthalate. Emulsifying agents or stabilisers such as barium oleate, calcium or aluminium stearate, lanoline, bentonite or calcium or barium hydroxide may also be present. The emulsions may also contain zinc oxide or calcium, strontium or barium carbonate. In examples, (1) an emulsion is obtained by stirring a solution of polyvinyl chloride in cyclohexanone into a mixture of a similar solution with an aqueous paste containing "Monolite" (Registered Trade Mark) fast scarlet RN and passing the mixture through a homogeniser; (2) an emulsion suitable for use in printing is obtained by adding a solution of ployvinyl chloride in a mixture of cyclohexanone, solvent naphtha and decahydronaphthalene to a mixture of a similar solution with an aqueous paste containing the dyestuff 3:3'-dichlorobenzidine, acetoacetanilide (2 mols.) and passing the mixture through a homogeniser; (3) a similar emulsion is obtained by adding an aqueous paste containing chlorinated copper phthalocyanine to a mixture of chalk with a solution of polyvinyl chloride in cyclohexanone and passing the mixture through a homogeniser; (4) a similar emulsion is obtained by adding an aqueous paste containing "Monolite" fast scarlet RN to a mixture of tricresyl phosphate with a solution of polyvinyl chloride in cyclohexanone and passing the mixture through a homogeniser. Specifications 397,711, [Group IV], 485,000, [Group V], and 523,090, [Group IV], are referred to.
