Abstract

547,763. Spring frames for motor-cycles &c. MACBETH, C. Dec. 14, 1940, No. 17678. [Class 136 (iii)] In a rear wheel suspension the wheel spindle A is carried between a pair of lever arms f each of which is journalled to the vehicle frame through a torsional spring unit embodying means whereby the unit may be put under varying initial stresses opposed to the stresses imparted by the load carried on the vehicle and of a magnitude depending upon the load to be carried. As shown, the torsional spring unit is similar to those described in Specifications 363,039, [Group XXXII], and 521,258, and comprises a rubber disc c bonded on its opposite faces to metal plates d, e. The plate d is secured by bolts d<SP>4</SP>, d<SP>5</SP> to the arm f, which is journalled on a spindle g. The plate e is rotatably mounted, by means of a bush e<SP>1</SP>, on the spindle g, and has an extension e<SP>2</SP> which rests on a cam h having pockets (or flat sides) h<SP>5</SP>, h<SP>6</SP>, h<SP>7</SP>, h<SP>8</SP>. When a light solo rider is to ride the machine, the extension e<SP>2</SP> rests in the pocket h.<SP>5</SP> For a heavy solo rider the cam is turned (by a handle I having a spring-loaded splined connection with the cam-shaft) so that the extension e<SP>2</SP> rests in the pocket h<SP>6</SP>, whereby the rubber disc c is pre-stressed anticlockwisely, Fig. 3, thus offsetting the clockwise stress imparted by the weight of the rider. The cam may be arcuate in shape, thus allowing gradual adjustment, in which case locking means are necessary. The levers f are connected at their forward ends, by a brace f<SP>1</SP> and oscillate on the spindle g between rubber buffers q, q<SP>1</SP>. Specification 503,341 also is referred to.
