Abstract

547,117. Opening or separating kapok and other fibres. BALLAMY, L. M., and SHEEPSHANKS, R. H. July 11, 1941, No. 8800. [Class 120 (i)] A method of opening or separating kapok and other fibres consists in passing the material in a divided form through a pair of overlapping apertured screens 28, 29, Figs. 2 and 3, at least one of which is driven so as to produce relative movement. The material is treated in a preliminary disintegrator 10, Fig. 1, comprising an endless spiked belt 11 and rotary beaters 12 .. 15 and is carried by an air blast from the blower 18 up the passage 19 to the co-operating apertured screens situated at 20 and thence into a chamber 21. The opened material is formed into a composite lap on the moving screens 22, 23 and passes out of the machine at 27. The opening device at 20 comprises a fixed frame 28 and a frame 29 reciprocated by an eccentric 41, each frame being covered with wire mesh 30, 31 formed of interwoven wires and carrying overlapping tines at each alternate joint. The reciprocation of the screen 29 causes the tines thereon to travel to and fro past the fixed tines on the screen 28 and thus open the bunched or tangled fibres which are carried by the air blast through the co-operating screens. If desired the tines may be inclined and more than two screens can be provided while the motion may be other than reciprocatory.
