Abstract
546,911. Wet separating. LAWRIE, A. E., and COLLIERY ENGINEERING, Ltd. Feb. 3, 1941, No. 1394. [Class 82 (ii)] In sink-and-float or gravity concentration processes for the separation of solid materials, the heavy separating liquid comprises a suspension of finely divided flue dust from a metallurgical furnace in an aqueous medium. The dust may be separated in a dust-catcher of a blast furnace for iron or lead ores, a copper smelting reverberatory furnace or a rotary kiln treating crude alumina and may be classified before use. The dust may also be mixed with other substances such as barytes or clay for controlling the viscosity &c. of the liquid and dispersing or stabilizing agents such as sodium silicate, sodium aluminate, silicate gel; caustic soda and soda ash may be added. A pulsating motion may be imposed on the separating liquids or continuous horizontal or downward currents or a combination of these may be set up in the liquid.
