Abstract

1474554 Beneficiation of clays J M HUBER CORP 24 April 1974 [27 April 1973] 17974/74 Heading C1A Discolourants are removed from clay by addition of an oxidant, preferably sodium hypochlorite, to an aqueous slurry of a clay having weakly magnetically susceptible contaminant particles in minor concentration bound to the surface of the clay to chemically release the particles from the clay surface and thereafter magnetically separating the contaminant particles from the clay. Sodium hypochlorite can be added in an amount of ¢ to 8 lbs per ton of clay in the aqueous slurry together with one or more dispersants, e.g. sodium metasilicate and/ or sodium hexametaphosphate, which facilitate a reduction in viscosity of the aqueous clay slurry. Kaolin clays are referred to.
