Abstract

1344024 Froth flotation UNITED STATES BORAX & CHEMICAL CORP 5 July 1972 [21 Oct 1971] 31471/72 Heading B2H Arsenic minerals are removed from boratecontaining ores by forming an aqueous slurry of the ore at a temperature of at least 75‹C, subjecting the hot slurry to froth flotation and separating the tailings from the floated materials which contain a concentrate of the arsenic minerals. The ore may be ulexite (hydrated borate of sodium and calcium), colemanite (hydrated calcium borate) or tincal. The arsenic mineral may be realgar, As 4 S 4 or As 2 S 2 . Prior to the flotation step, the slurry may be conditioned with a flotation reagent, e.g. short hydrocarbon chain (C 2 to C 5 ) xanthate, kerosene, diesel oil or bunker oil. The floatation is carried out at a pH of at least 9.0. Flotation cells, in which aeration of the slurry takes place to produce the froth, may be arranged in series as rougher and cleaning cells. Examples are given.
