Abstract
1419554 Froth flotation of sylvinite ores AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 4 April 1973 [7 April 1972] 16198/73 Heading B2H In a method of desliming sylvinite ore a pulp of the ore in saturated brine or a slime fraction thereof obtained from preliminary desliming of the ore is treated with an acrylamide polymer to flocculate the slimes and with a cationic collector for the flocculated slimes and the treated pulp or fraction is then subjected to froth flotation to float off the slimes. The ore may first be crushed and then pulped in saturated brine. The pulped ore is conditioned with 0.005-0.5 pound per ton of the acrylamide polymer and with 0.01-1.0 pound per ton of the cationic collector. A frothing agent, e.g. methyl isobutyl carbinol, is added, air is introduced into the mixture, and the froth containing the slimes is removed by skimming. The skimmed-off froth may be subjected to a cleaner flotation stage, resulting in a froth product containing the slimes and a tailing containing sylvinite removed in the initial treatment. This second tailing is then combined with that from the initial slime flotation and the whole is sent to a conventional sylvinite flotation recovery step. In a modification, the original ore pulp is subjected to preliminary screening or hydrocyclonic separation and the slime fraction obtained therefrom is treated in the same manner as explained for the ore pulp. Examples of suitable acrylamide polymers are given. The cationic collector may be either a condensation product of 1 to 10 mole proportions of ethylene oxide with 1 mole proportion of a nitrogen-containing compound, examples of which are given, or a quaternary ammonium salt (e.g. chloride) having at least one long-chain (C 12 -C 18 ) alkyl or acyl group, examples of which are given.
