Abstract

[Class 117] [Also in Groups XXXV and XXII] In a transformer or reactor, the core comprises stacks of E-shaped laminations 13 of which the outer elements are crimped or bent as at 20 so as to provide a self-clamping structure when inserted within the winding structure. The method of assembly comprises stacking two groups of laminations on opposite sides of the winding structure, pushing a sufficient number from the bottom of the stacks towards each other with the outer elements in advance of the central groups, applying benders 38, 39, Fig. 23, to the overhanging tips of the outer elements, continuing to push them until they meet or abut against a gap spacer, and forcing the central group into registry with the outer elements so that the bent portions of the latter in the case of the middle legs grip the inside of the winding structure and, in the case of the outer legs, hold the central laminations firmly together. Cement 23, introduced through a duct 45, may also be used to assist in firmly securing the laminations within the winding structure. A machine for carrying out the above steps and comprising cam-operated pusher and bender elements, a gauging means for ensuring that a correct number of laminations are delivered from the stacks, an escape block designed to ensure that only laminations securely engaged by the pushers are fed forward to the bending positions, and a pump delivering cement in appropriate quantities is described in detail in the Specification.
