Abstract
546,480. Registering off-gauge length of strip. AMERICAN ROLLING MILL CO. Feb. 24, 1941, No. 2506. Convention date, May 10, 1940. [Class 106 (i)] The length of strip above and below the tolerance thickness of strip 4 passing through a rolling mill 1, 2 is indicated in addition to the total length of strip. The strip passes from the mill over a roller 6 to a coiler 5. The roller 6 drives through gears 7, 8 and gear box 9, a Selsyn transmitter 10 electrically connected to a Selsyn receiver 16. The gauge slides on a support and is moved into or out of engagement with the strip by a lever which causes a mercury switch 14 in the circuit of the Selsyn device to be made or broken. The indicator 15 of the instrument is provided with adjustable contacts which can be set at any desired point above or below the predetermined gauge. The Selsyn receiver 16 drives a shaft 17 driving in turn through mitre gears 18, 25, 26 counters 19, 21, 23. The counter 19 is driven through a coupling 20 while counters 21, 23 are driven through magnetic clutches 22, 24 energized only when the gauge makes contact at the higher or lower limit. The counter 19 thus indicates the total length of strip rolled, the counter 21 the length of strip aver gauge, and the counter 23 the length of strip under gauge. The A.C. power is supplied from lines 27, 28, Fig. 5, connected to the Selsyn device as shown. The clutches 22, 24 are provided with D.C. through a rectifier 35 connected to the indicator and clutches as shown.
