Abstract

546,370. Sparking-plugs. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. June 24, 1941, No. 7919. Convention date, July 24, 1940. [Class 7 (iv)] [ Also in Group XXIII] A sparking plug comprises spaced electrodes 14, 16, an insulator 10 of sintered refractory oxide, or a combination of a sintered oxide and silicate, and a lead-silca glass 26 or other insulating material of about the same dielectric constant (6) interposed between one of the electrodes and the insulator to reduce the electric stress at the surface of the insulator. As shown, the electrode 16 comprises an upper portion 20, of goodconducting metal such as copper, and a portion 18, of heat and corrosion resistant metal or alloy, connected by electrically conductive glass 22. The lead-silica glass 26 is fused in place or powdered and tamped in place. In a modification, the electrode sections are integral, welded together or held in contact. The lead-silica glass may be outside the insulator.
