Abstract
545,648. Germicidal soaps. GIVAUDANDELAWANNA, Inc. March 14, 1941, No. 3537. Convention date, March 15, 1940. [Class 91] [Also in Group VI] The germicidal ingredient of a soap comprises a 2, 2' di-hydroxy halogenated diphenylmethane and preferably a tetra or hexachloro derivative or a di- or tetrabromo derivative. Compounds specified comprise the following derivatives:- 5, 5<SP>1</SP> dichloro, 3, 5-3<SP>1</SP>, 5' tetrachloro, 3, 5, 6- 3<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>1</SP>, hexachloro; 5, 5<SP>1</SP> dibromo, and 3, 5- 3<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>1</SP> tetrabromo. Of these, the most effective germicidally is 2, 2<SP>1</SP>-dihydroxy-3, 5, 6-31, 51, 61, hexachloro-diphenylmethane, particularly against the bactorium, staphylococcus aureus, even in a concentration of less than 1 to 5000 in the presence of a large excess of soap. This compound is also specified in the form of its sodium salt. Compounds referred to in the prior art for use in germicidal soaps include chlor-thymol, benzyl-o-chlorophenol, and 6-chloro-2-phenylphenol. The diphenylmethane derivatives concerned may be prepared by the condensation of the appropriate halogenated phenols with formaldehyde in the presence of an acid condensing agent such as sulphuric acid. A liquid soap is specified containing 40 per cent. of soap prepared from 75 per cent. coconut oil and 25 per cent. castor oil.
