[Class 74 (ii)] A hand knitting-appliance has a set of fixed pins 19 and a set of slidable members 16 actuated by a cam plate 7 having an adjustable portion 74 so that the action upon the members 16 can be varied. In operation, a thread is wrapped around each of the fixed pins, and with the members 16 projected above the thread around the pins, a further length 25 of the thread is laid upon the members. The cam 7 is moved lengthways of the device to withdraw the - members 16 and to kink the thread 25 and the loops around the pins 19 are cast off as e.g. by a crochet needle. Upon subsequent movement of the cam 7 and projection of the members 16 more thread is laid and is kinked and the loops again cast off the pins 19. The adjustable portion 74 having a cam face 75 permits a more rapid retraction of the members 16, so that since fewer members 16 with their loops are retracted for the same movement of the cam the tension in the thread is reduced. By using additional spacing plates 71, the size of the knitted loops can be increased. With the form of device shown in Fig. 1, it is necessary to lift the block 21 carrying the pins 19 after each loop forming operation and to turn it through 180 degrees so that the fabric formed can be kept in its correct position. By providing a space 21<SP>11</SP>, Fig. 11, between the block 21 and the bed for the sliding members 16 through which space the fabric can pass the necessity for lifting and turning the block 21 is obviated.
