Abstract

545,180. Closures for containers. BJERLING, O. B. March 31, 1942, No. 4275. [Class 125 (iii)] A receptacle 1 to contain foodstuffs or like materials has an opening 15 closed by a cover 5; the peripheral flange 3 of the container end outside the opening 15 has a channel 6 with ridges 7, 8 on each side of it adapted to engage in grooves 9, 10 in the cover. Rings 11 of resilient material are placed between the ridges and grooves The cover may be put on under vacuum, and it can be easily released by piercing it above the channel 6 with a pointed tool. If desired, the cover can be put on under vacuum before the bottom at the tin factory, and the receptacle filled from the bottom end at the filling factory; the bottom can then be attached in the usual way by folding or in any other way. Instead of the space 6 being channelled it may be bounded by flat surfaces between flat sealing rings. In a modification only one flat sealing ring is used, and this has a number of openings so that when the receptacle is closed by the cover separate cells are formed, each of which has to be broken to enable the cover to be removed.
