[Class 83 (iii)] A lathe or like machine tool comprises a base D supporting a headstock pillar A and a pillar C provided with vertical guideways C<SP>1</SP> on which the counterbalanced tailstock E is mounted. The upper parts of the pillars are connected by a bed B carrying the tools. One or both of the pillars may be slidable relative to the base and bed to vary the distance between centres.
