Abstract

544,007. Valves. BENDIX-WESTINGHOUSE AUTOMOTIVE AIR BRAKE CO. Sept. 18, 1940, No. 14314. Convention date, Oct. 6, 1939. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXXIV] A self-lapping control valve mechanism, which is operated by a pivoted member 25 carrying a graduating spring 24 for acting upon a pin 36 of the valve mechanism and which may be maintained in contact with a cross-pin 34 of the member 25 with a predetermined tension, comprises a pressure-responsive member 20 forming a pressure chamber in the valve casing 3 having exhaust and intake valves 13 and 14 connected by means such as the rod 15 and a partition 6, forming in the casing an outlet chamber 7, which leads to a fluid pressure actuator 46, and an exhaust chamber 8 connected to the atmosphere through opening 9 ; the inlet valve 14 has a seat member 12 secured in the casing by an inlet housing 10 attached to the casing 3 and forming an intake chamber 11, which is connected to a fluid pressure reservoir 44 ; exhaust valve 13 has a seat at the lower end of a plunger 17 with an axial bore 18 serving as an exhaust passage into chamber 8. The plunger 17, which is secured to the pressure-responsive member 20, is connected to the graduating spring 24 by the pin 36 taking into a recess at the top of the plunger, the first movement of the actuating member 25 resulting in the downward movement of the plunger so as to seat the exhaust valve 12, the further movement resulting in the opening of the inlet valve 14. The chamber 49 below the pressure-responsive member 20 receives the pressure of the outlet chamber through a passage in the partition 6 furnished with a choke 50 to delay building up of pressure under member 20 and so obtain prompt action of the actuator 46 ; the reverse action also takes place rapidly on release. Specification 488,208 is referred to.
