Abstract
542,350. Vehicle frames. MACBETH, C. April 22, 1940, No. 7192. [Class 79 (iv)] A transversal for a vehicle chassis is built up of two nesting channelled members 1, 2, the inner being shallower than the outer to produce a box form. The edges of the flanges of each member are in the same plane, or may be formed with overlapping lips along the whole or a part or parts of its length, and, the members 1, 2 are rivetted, bolted, or welded together. The ends of the transversal rise as shown in elevation in Fig. 1 to accommodate sleeves 10, 11 welded in place to receive suspension links. Plates or straps 16, 17 are welded on the inside face of the member 1 to receive bolts 12, 13, 14, 15 whereby the transversal may be attached to the side members of the chassis, and these bolts may extend through the base of the channel member 2, being shouldered to form a supporting abutment therefor. A U-shaped bracket 20 is welded to each end of the transversal to hold elements of the steering gear. Platforms 4, 5 carry cushioning blocks. A modified manner of attachment to the ends of the longitudinals 27 is shown in Fig. 7, a flanged sleeve 26 being welded &c. to the longitudinal and nesting in the cup of the member 1 to receive holding bolts 12, 14.
