541,831. Men's collars; presses. CLUETT, PEABODY & CO., Inc. Feb. 18, 1941, No. 2207. Convention date, April 18, 1940. [Class 141] Collars that are to be attached to shirts are made from parts larger than normal sewn together and then put under pressure while the collar is forcibly contracted lengthwise. For this purpose the collars may be placed while damp on the bed 24 of a press formed of rubber clamped to parts 21 which can be moved by fluid pressure to stretch the rubber, in which condition the collar is placed in position. The head of the press which is made of polished metal, is then lowered, and while the collar is under pressure the rubber is allowed to contract, thus reducing the length of the collar. In another form of apparatus the press comprises a concave head co-operating with a padded buck of slightly greater radius, the longitudinal compressive movement being effected by further pressure between the parts after they have been moved into contact. The packing may consist of layers of steel wool with fabric coverings.
