Abstract

541,333. Feeding sheets. BACKHOUSE, H. T. May 20, 1940, No. 7173. [Class 100 (i)] To assist the registration of sheets fed over a layboard to front lays one or more suction devices 4 are arranged to contact with the leading edge of the sheet as it approaches the front lays, and to move with the sheet until it reaches the lays, the suction then being cut off or in some cases maintained while the suckers 4 slide over the sheet. The face 11 of each suckar 4 is preferably inclined so that a smoothing effect on the sheet is effected as the sheet moves under the rear edge of the sucker towards the front edge. The sucker 4 is integral with a tube 9 which is reciprocated to-and-fro by an oscillating bell-crank lever 7 operated by an oscillating lever 15 actuated by a cam and Bowden wire 17. When the member 4 reaches its forward position it is raised from the sheet by the action of an abutment 21 on lever 7 upon a stop 20 on the tube 9. The air pressure in the tube 9 is controlled by a tube 12 having air connection with the hollow shaft 16 of the lever arm 15. An adjustable leak valve 14 controls the air pressure in the tube 9. The invention may be applied to overlapping feeds of the kind described in Specification 427,041.
