Abstract

449,133. Feeding sheets. SPIESS, G., 78, Zschocherschestrasse, Leipsic, Germany. Nov. 8, 1935, No. 30979. Convention date, Nov. 15, 1934. [Class 100 (i)] In connection with a sheet-separating device for sheet-feeding machines, of the kind in which a suction separator 14 acts on the rear edge of the pile and is moved from the pile by means operated by the pressure in the suction conduit connected to the separator, the lifting of the suction separator causes the operation, of other members necessary for the complete separation of the sheet, e.g. a presser member 30 which is fitted with an air blast nozzle acting to detach sheets from the separator 14 should double feed occur and to control the pile-raising gear, a blast nozzle 21, and means for giving a bodily movement to the separator 14. At the commencement of the separating action the separator 14, which is pivotally mounted in an arm 12, is in the position shown in Fig. 1, and a sliding piston valve, comprising a rod 68, Fig. 4, reciprocated by a crank and fitted with pistons 69, 70, 71 for controlling the air pressures, is in the position shown in Fig. 4. In this position a port 72 connected to a suction pump is connected to the suction conduit of the separator 14, and a compressed air pump is connected to pipes leading to the nozzle 21 via ports 73, 82, 85. The air from the nozzle 21 acts on the edge of the pile. The member 30 is in a position raised from the pile and no air passes to it. When a sheet is sucked up by the separator 14 the air pressure in a cylinder 3 is reduced and a piston 5 is moved into the cylinder and operates by a link 6 a lever 7 formed with a projection 7<a> adapted to operate a link system comprising links 9, 11 and the arm 12 carrying the separator 14. The link 9 also operates a link 19 forming part of a link system 15, 16, 18, 19 which controls the angular position of the nozzle 14. The movement of the lever 7 also operates to release a catch lever 53 with a bent end which normally engages a roller 52 on a spring-controlled arm 36 fitted with a roller 34 normally engaging a recess 35 in a lever 23 and acting to hold the presser foot 30 and its controlling linkage system 26, 25, 23 in the raised position. The foot is thus released to move under spring action into the position shown in Fig. 3, and simultaneously therewith the compressed air supply is cut off from the nozzle 21 and connected to the foot 30. This is effected by an auxiliary piston rod 76 which is moved to the left in Fig. 4 when the air pressure is lowered in the suction conduit, thus closing the port 85 and opening a port 84. The air emerges from the foot 30 only when a rotary cock 91, Fig. 10, at the toe of the foot is operated by a pivoted stirrup member which has a pivotal movement on contacting with the pile. When the separator 14 has been lifted from the pile, and the pile engaged by the foot 30, the separator 14 is given a to-and-fro movement by means of a cam 50 acting on a roller 48 attached to one link 45 of a parallel link system 45, 43, 44. When the roller 48 engages the lower part of the cam the rod 43 is depressed and a lever 40 having a roller 41 resting on the bar 43 is moved clockwise by a spring 42. A spring- controlled lever 18 controlled thereby is similarly moved clockwise, and owing to its connection by a link 19 with the end of the rod 12, the rod 12 is moved anticlockwise about its connection with the link 11 and the separator 14 moves to the position shown in Fig. 3. The lever 40 also operates to restore the foot 30 to its normal inactive position after the feeding of a sheet. To prepare for this the lever 40 by means of a link 39 restores the connection of the roller 34 with the recess 35 of the lever 23 when the separator 14 moves to the left. The pile is fed upwards as required by pneumatically operated means of the kind set forth in Specification 442,445 under control of a valve 61 operated by a stop lever 58 which is normally pressed by a spring against a stop 59. When the pile is low the link 26 descends far enough to act on the end 57 of the lever 58, and thus cause the raising of the pile.
