Abstract

539,683. Uprooting plants &c. BOMFORD & EVERSHED, Ltd., and BOMFORD, D. R. May 2, 1940, No. 7871. [Class 78 (iv)] A device for uprooting plants, bushes, fencing posts &c. comprises two jaw members A, B coacting to form a hook for engaging and gripping the plant &c., the jaw A being fixed to a draw-bar 6 for connection to a tractor and the jaw B being slidable on the jaw A. As shown, the jaw A comprises a plate 7 with flanges 7a, 7b and may be in line with the draw-bar 6 or connected thereto by a cranked portion 7c. The jaw B comprises parallel plates 8 sliding over the flanges 7a, 7b and guided by rollers 9a, 9b, 10a, 10b running on the inclined flange 7b, so that the stem of a plant &c. is gripped between the flange 7a, on the jaw A, and gripping teeth 8c on the jaw B. A hook-shaped part 7e limits the travel of the roller l0a and an extension 8d on the jaw B guides a plant stem into the jaws. The jaws may be normally held in the open position by a catch on a trip lever 11a pivoted at 13 and engaging a projection 8e on the slidable jaw and releasable manually or by a cable or rod operated from the tractor.
