Abstract

539,296. Vegetable glucosides. CELEC CORPORATION, Ltd., and PHILLIPS, S. M. Dec. 2, 1939, No. 31317. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group V] A complex mixture of glucosides is extracted from the leaves of the Agaves, Phormium Tenax and bracken by breaking down the hard outer skin of the leaves and then with or without removal of the fibres, boiling or soaking the leaves in water, the aqueous extract so obtained may if desired be treated with a precipitating agent such as lead acetate, tin chloride, or an aluminium compound to separate the complex glucosides from the free sugars in the plants. The extract may be used as an insecticide, as an anti-scale for boilers and as a preservative against fungal and bacterial action. The glucosides may be hydrolyzed if desired.
