Abstract

539,016. Lathes. WHITTLE, A. May 16, 1940, No. 8750. [Class 83 (iii)] A machine for parting-off piston rings from a roughly-machined cylinder comprises a shaft 3 carrying a gang of spaced circular saws 4 which cut simultaneously through a pair of cylindrical blanks L mounted on rotating spindles 17a on opposite sides of the saws, the spindles being supported on sliding carriages 11 the forward and return movements of which are effected by double-acting hydraulic cylinders 12. The blanks L are held by slotted sleeves 17b which are expanded by hydraulic pressure applied to bevelled discs which engage correspondingly bevelled ends of the sleeves A. The front end bearings of the spindles 17a are arranged so that they may be withdrawn from the spindles and swung aside about pivots 21 to enable the blanks to be placed in position and the parted-off rings to be withdrawn. The shaft 3 on which the saws are mounted has in addition to its main bearings a thrust bearing carried on a bracket at the rear of the machine and adjustable for end play.
