Abstract
538,766. Machinery guards. GRAINGER, J. A Feb. 14, 1940, No. 2790. [Class 80 (iv)] The guard of a press is power actuated ; the press cannot be started unless the guard is in the safe position and should the guard be obstructed the press cannot be started. The main shaft 4 has a flywheel 5, a gear wheel 6, a main clutch 7 and two cams 8, 9. The cam 8 is adapted to actuate a swinging guard 10 through a lever 11 and rod 13. Cam 9 is adapted to actuate a secondary clutch 14 on the crankshaft 15 through a rod 16, a member 17 pivoted to a lever 34, an arm 18 and rod 20. The main clutch 7 is actuated by a pedal 21 through a rod 22 and member 23. The crankshaft has a gear wheel 26 gearing with and having half the number of teeth of the wheel 6. Pivoted to member 17 is a rod 28 pivoted also to a guard frame 29 which carries the guard 10. During the first 90 degrees of revolution of shaft 4, the guard 10 is moved to closed or safe position ; during the next 180 degrees the cam 9 closes the clutch 14 and the crankshaft makes one revolution, the guard being held closed, and during the last 90 degrees the guard is opened. Should the guard, in approaching its closed position, be obstructed, e.g. by the operator's arm, the frame 29 is moved and the member 17 displaced from under the rod 16 so that the connection between the cam 9 and clutch 14 is broken and the crankshaft 15 remains at rest.
