Abstract

538,738. Bearing for gramophone pick-up arms. SLADE, H. V., OFFEN, F. J., and GARRARD ENGINEERING & MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. May 31, 1940, No. 9574. [Class 40 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] A gramophone pick-up arm 1 is mounted on a bearing 8 comprising balls 10 held against cones 6b by a spring 13, and cylindrical journals 11 normally clear from spindles 6a, so that in normal play the balls provide an anti-friction bearing ; but any strong lateral stress such as may occur when the arm is handled causes the spring to yield and the spindles 6a to contact with the journals 11, so that the ball bearings are relieved of strong stresses which are taken up instead by the journal bearings.
