Abstract

538,147. Coated fabrics. MICAFIL, Ltd. April 9, 1940, No. 6410. Convention date, Aug. 12, 1939: [Class 140] [Also in Group XXXVI] In order to enable the di-electric of a wound condenser or lead-in insulator to be stressed fully, i.e. 10 KV per cm without breakdown at the edges of the conductive coatings, the number of intermediate conductive coatings 9 is increased, with consequential lessening of the thickness of the di-electric layers, so that the voltage between adjacent layers is less than a voltage such that, with a corresponding thickness of di-electric, the edges of the coatings being open to the air, noises or increase of losses due to " corona " would be produced. The conductive layers may decrease in area towards the outside, as indicated in Fig. 2 or they may be displaced laterally to have' a coned longitudinal cross-section. A method of making is described in which the conductive coatings are formed by spraying colloidal carbon on to a web of insulator, to form areas, separated by uncoated insulation of a size dependent on the radius of the winding, such that the insulation forms one or more complete turns between the coatings. The coatings are thin, of the order of 1/30 the thickness of the insulation, which itself is of the order of 1 millimeter.
