Abstract
537,983. Thermal switches. SIMPLEX ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., DAVIS, P. W.; and BARTON; A. V. Jan. 13, 1940, No. 786. [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XIII] The temperature of a hot plate 10 or other appliance is controlled by the expansion of a gas such as air or nitrogen in a hollow member 14 exposed to the heat of the appliance and connected by a flexible copper capillary tube 15 to an expansible member such as a bellows 19 which operates an adjustable snap-action switch. The hollow member 14 may be a hollow disc or, as shown, a tube which may be either straight or arcuate and may have a a crosssection which is either flattened or D-shaped. The bellows acts on a screw 37 in a lever 36 which is pressed downwards by springs 39 the strength of which is adjustable by rotating a knob 49 carrying, a face cam 46 which bears on a stud 44 in a lever 40. The member 46 also has a projection 55 which in the " off " position of the knob 49 shown engages the end of the lever 36 and forces it into the position in which a contact member 27 carried by a spring blade 24 on the lever is in the open position. An armature 33 co-operates with a magnet 34 to give a snap-action. Specification 537,984 is referred to.
