Abstract

537,665. Hand wheels. SOC. ITALIANA PIRELLI. Dec. 29, 1939, No. 33053. Convention date, Jan. 12. [Class 80 (iv)] A steering wheel comprises a metal hub 4 connected by flexible spokes 3 to a metal reinforcement 5 of the rim. This reinforcement comprises several groups of wires spaced apart in the groups and with the groups spaced apart from one another, and the wires may be connected to another transversely by metal pieces. Over the metal skeleton thus composed is applied a hard rubber covering 9 embedding the hub and rim but not the spokes the whole or a portion of the length of which is left bare. The spokes, in one form, may comprise a number of metal rods 6 united at their outer ends to a terminal piece 7 from which projects a T-shaped member 8. This projects through the wires, to some of which it may be welded, and interlocks with the hard rubber. The rods 6 are welded at their inner ends to the hub 4. In a modification, the spokes consist of several slotted metal plates superimposed on one another to form a resilient laminated structure.
