Abstract

1,183,048. Vehicle steering wheels. R. A. ALLEN and R. E. LEGG. 20 Nov., 1967 [18 Aug., 1966], No. 37039/66. Heading B7J. A vehicle steering wheel comprises integral pairs of spokes 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, 11 attached to an auxiliary hub 12, and integral pairs of flexible spokes 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17, 18 secured to a main hub 19 (keyed to a steering shaft and parallel to the plane of the wheel rim 2), the auxiliary hub 12 being axially spaced from the main hub 19, which is welded to the spokes 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, 11. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the pairs of spokes 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, 11 are integral with portions 3, 4 and 5 of the core of the rim 2 and adjacent spokes are welded to each other as at Y, and the outer ends of the spokes 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17, 18 are welded to the underside of the spokes 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, 11. In another embodiment, the core portions are omitted and the rim is of rectangular or rounded section. The outer ends of the spokes 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17, 18 are welded to the sides of the spokes 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, 11, and the combined ends engage slots in the rim or are secured to the underside of the rim. The rim may be of wood, metal, plastics or leather.
