Abstract

537,467. Matting textiles. SOC. OF CHEMICAL INDUSTRY IN BASLE. Sept. 26, 1939, Nos. 26668 and 26669. Convention dates, Sept. 30, 1938 and Aug. 18, 1939. Samples furnished. [Class 15 (ii)] In the process of matting textile materials by immersing them in a bath containing urea and formaldehyde or a condensation product thereof in solution with a condensing agent (e.g. acid), such as described in Specifications 469,688 and 528,686, the bath is used repeatedly with fresh batches of textile material by adding further quantities of reagent to replace those consumed. The higher the concentration of urea-formaldehyde compound, the lower the hydrogen ion concentration of the acid should be. It is advantageous to work with a proportion of 1 part of goods to be treated to at least 15 parts of liquor. In an example, 1 kilo of viscose artificial silk is reeled for 1 hour at 20‹ C. in 80 litres of liquor containing .32 kilo of urea, .48 litres of formaldehyde solution containing 360 grms. of formaldehyde per litre, and 1.4 litres of HCl of 30 per cent. strength. For matting a further kilo of viscose in the same bath, the liquor receives .1 kilo of urea and .16 litres of formaldehyde. In other examples a solution of monomethylourea is used. Samples of matted viscose artificial silk yarn are furnished produced by a solution of equimolecular proportions of mono- and di-methylol urea and by a solution of di-methylol urea, respectively.
