Abstract

537,132. Concentrating latex. HOLMAN, W. I. M., and REVERTEX, Ltd. Jan. 3, 1940, Nos. 182 and 1397. [Class 70] Latex of rubber, guttapercha, balata &c. is pre-conditioned for concentration by evaporation by adding at least 100 milli-equivalents of caustic alkali per kilogram, allowing to stand in air for upwards of 2 days to hydrolize the heatcoagulable proteins, leaving, however, the heatinsentitive proteins of higher molecular weight, and dialysing the hydrolized latex. Before concentration a small proportion of caustic alkali or ammonia and advantageously a protective substance, such as soap, sulphonated oil, starch, gum, gelatine lipins, polyhydric alcohols &c. are added to preserve the dialysed latex and increase its stability.
