Abstract

536,659. Valves. NORTH BRITISH RUBBER CO., Ltd, and BRIDGENS, W. R. Dec. 30, 1939, No. 33122. [Class 135] A pressure reducing valve which is formed so that it may be streamlined into any existing pipe line with little loss of space is constructed with a longitudinally extensible and contractible chamber a formed by a rubber, canvas, rubber and canvas, or extensible metal tube secured to inner sleeves e, d of flanges b, c secured respectively to a fixed outlet pipe g and a floating inlet pipe h. The member c carries a movable valve seating m and to the member b a valve on a fixed spindle n is secured. An adjustable spring q normally keeps the valve open but when the pressure in the chamber a rises to a pre-determined value the member c is moved to close the valve. The valve thus delivers fluid at a pressure which cannot exceed a pre-determined value, and it is stated that the pressure of the fluid delivered tends to this constant value which can be set within wide limits by means of the screw s which adjusts the spring q. The member b is connected to bolts t and the movement of the member c is limited by nuts u, u<SP>1</SP> on the bolts. In a modification the member b is made the movable member and the members b, c slide like pistons in an outer cylinder on which screws a member for adjusting the pressure of a spring which acts on the member h so as to produce the closing pressure. The device may act as a safety valve by constructing the chamber a so that it will fracture if the pressure exceeds a pre-determined value. The chamber a may be formed with a corrugation k.
