Abstract

536,579. Tension limiting devices. CARLING, E. C. Feb. 7, 1940, No. 24604/39. [Class 78 (v)] A winding-in apparatus which imparts drive to the reservoir drum only when the cable, flexible tube &c. is slack comprises a flat or V-shaped friction drive train 21, 22, 23, of which the wheel 21 is on, or driven by, an electric motor or a road wheel of the apparatus and the ring 23 is attached to the winding drum D. The intermediate wheel 22 is carried by an extension 25 of a bell-crank pivoted on the drum axis 6, the upper arm 24 of the bellcrank carrying a pulley 18 over which the cable 12 is rove. The weight of the bell-crank members, or a spring or rubber block, biasses the wheel 22 into contact with both the wheel 21 and the ring 23, thus imparting drive to the drum D. Tension on the cable 12, however, pulls the wheel 22 away from the drive wheel 21 and allows the drum to stop. The wheel 22 may be mounted on a member 25<SP>1</SP> pivoted at 25<SP>2</SP> to the extension 25, a spring 25<SP>3</SP> serving to press the wheel 22 positively against the rim 23. The current may be led to the motor from the cable 12 by way of brushes 13, 14 and slip rings 8, 9 on the drum. Above the pulley 18 is another guide pulley which may swivel about a vertical axis. In modifications the pivoted arm 24 may control a motor switch or a magnetic driving clutch. The requisite tension in the cable for interrupting the drive to the drum may be variable, e.g. a clutch with adjustable slip may be employed. The payed out cable may be laid in hooks, troughs &c. suspended from a roof.
