536,299. Trueing grinding-wheels. THURLEY, G. S., and BRITISH GEAR GRINDING & MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. Nov. 8, 1939, No. 29664. [Class 60] A grinding wheel for precision gear grinding has its profile generated to involute form by a diamond tool controlled by a tangent bar cooperating with a base circle cylinder 1 has means for moving the diamond independently of the involute generating mechanism to form a wheel which will cut teeth having an undercut arcuate portion lying within the base circle. The cylinder 1 is connected by flexible tapes 3-5 to a tangent bar 2 carrying a slide 12 fitted with a projection 17 on which the holder 11a of the diamond tool 11 rotates on the bearings 18. The cylinder 1 is mounted on an arbor 14 which is eccentrically mounted on a shaft 15 which has eccentric mounting points 16 on the centre of the cylinder 1. By these eccentric adjustments the portion of the effective part of the cylinder may be altered to vary the pressure angle of the gear being formed. Also cylinders of size different from the theoretical size may be used to obtain modifications of the theoretical profile. The diamond may be pivoted about the projection 17 by a handle to obtain an arcuate profile of adjustable radius on the wheel below the base circle whereby an undercut is produced on the wheel being ground. The tangent bar is mounted on a slide 22 on a carrier 23 which is fitted with a handle 20 by which the apparatus is rocked round the arbor 14 to shape the involute on the wheel 13. The generating cylinders may also be of modified shape to give relief to the resultant gear teeth to compensate for deflections under load. The cylinder and tangent bar may be replaced by a gear and rack mechanism. The apparatus may be mounted on the machine in place of the gear to be ground when the wheel profile requires to be trued.
