Abstract
536.173. Casting refractory articles. HARTFORD-EMPIRE CO. Oct. 27, 1939. No. 28875. Convention date, Sept. 7. [Class 87 (ii)] A composite refractory article is formed by casting a slip for the outer layer in a plaster mould, allowing the slip to set to form a shell of the desired thickness, withdrawing surplus slip and casting within the shell a slip of different composition for the interior of the article. As shown applied to a glass feeder tube, a shell 18 is first formec between a plaster core 15 anc mould 13 the surplus slip being removed by inverting the mould after which the mould is reinverted and the slip for the interior 19 is introduced through a pair of funnels 16 sufficient being allowed to remain in the funnels to compensate for shrinkage. When the interior slip has set, the top 14 of the mould is removed, the core 15 is withdrawn and the composite article removed by inverting the mould upon a support and raising mould. The outer layer is formed of a composition having a higher coefficient of expansion than the inner layer, in particular, tabular corundum. The interior may be of a similar composition or may comprise a corundum dispension or powder, 1 cc. kaolin and ball clay with a trace of aluminium powdeer to form a porous interior. Examples of compositions for the outer layer and interior are given.
