Abstract

An operative surface of a porous mould for use in the manufacture of ceramic ware such as plates or cups, by turning in co-operation with a forming tool or by slip-casting, comprises permeable sintered particles of glass. The mould may be entirely of sintered glass or may have for instance a base of other sintered refractory material such as alumina. In other embodiments, the operative surface of a sintered alumina mould is filled with fine glass powder which is sintered in situ, or soft and hard glasses are mixed and sintered and the soft glass is then leached out with acid. The sintered permeable glass mould may be heated to a higher temperature than a plaster mould and is not so fragile.
