Abstract

1414485 Silicon carbide ; silicon nitride; casting glass NORMALAIR-GARRETT (HOLDINGS) Ltd and UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 30 May 1973 [7 June 1972] 26515/72 Headings C1A and C1M A refractory artefact is made by casting a mixture of a refractory material, a binder and a non-aqueous diluent compatible with the binder and not removable during the curing step, curing the binder to give a moulded artefact, removing the binder from the moulded artefact and subsequently firing the artefact, the diluent being removed prior to firing. The refractory material may be glass (petalite, a borosilicate or lithium alumino-silicate glass), a pure oxide ceramic such as alumina or zirconia, a carbide ceramic, a metal (nickel or stainless steel) or silicon. Mixtures of silicon carbide and carbide powders which may be fired in contact with silicon, silicon powder which may be converted into silicon nitride by firing in a nitrogen atmosphere are preferred. The binder may be an epoxy resin. Specified diluents include dibutyl phthalate, and benzyl alcohol.
