Abstract

536,156. Boring bars and heads; reamers &c. TAYLOR, L. Feb. 3, 1940, No. 2154. [Class 83 (iii)] A reamer or boring-bar comprises a pair of cutters t adapted to be mounted to a slot or channel of a bar a and supported on an intermediate bed plate b associated with adjusting screws c and forming a complete cutter assembly which may either float in the boring-bar or be clamped in position. In Fig. 1 an end recess in the bar is closed by a disc a<SP>1</SP> and the holes t are on opposite sides of the intermediate plate b. Opposite sides of this plate are recessed at b' and tapered to provide a half nut for an adjusting screw c engaging the back of the cutter. The complementary half-nut consists of a separate member d secured to the plate b by screws d<SP>1</SP> to grip the screw firmly after adjustment. The two tools and the plate b are secured by a bolt f. The tool 'assembly may be free to float in the bar or it may be clamped therein by a screw e. In a modification, Fig. 5, the tools slide in dovetail grooves in the plate b and are secured by clamping washers g operated to secure the tools by screws g<SP>2</SP> passing through the half nut members d and the plate b. The cutter assembly may be fixed in position or it may float in the bar a. In one form the floating movement may be controlled by springs 2, Fig. 7, located between pockets in the plate b and cover plates 4. In another modification the cutter assembly may be clamped by screws in a separate member h, Fig. 9, which floats against springs i in the bar a. In another modification for mounting a slot in a bar, the blate b, Fig. 11, may be gapped to receive the reduced end of a screw j which serves as an abutment for the springs k which permit the floating movement. The tools are, in'this case, adjusted by the heads of. screws m, and are clamped by strips n operated by screws n<SP>1</SP>.
