Abstract
535,943. Electric furnaces. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. (Ferguson, J.) Oct. 25, 1939, No. 28629. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XII] An electric furnace for melting and refining glass comprises a central melting chamber 10 with a forehearth or refining chamber 11 at each side connected by submerged channels 23. A discharge opening 15 is provided in the chamber 10, and openings 20 with orifice rings 21 in the chambers 11. Reciprocating plungers 22 are provided to feed the glass for moulded articles. Gas burners 25 may be provided for reheating the glass in the chambers 11. A graphite electrode 26 is supported by a pair of graphite extensions 27 with steel sheathing 28, from each end wall of the chamber 10. The electrodes are spaced from the walls by relatively cool glass which protects the rear faces and the supports. A space 30 in the wall 17 facilitates freezing of glass which might leak through the wall. In a modification, Fig. 6, no forehearths are employed, and a central discharge opening 32 is provided with an apertured disc 41. The electrodes 37 are considerably above floor level so that a relatively hot melting zone is superposed on a cooler refining zone.
