[Class 140] A leather substitute is made by treating loose fibrous material first with an aqueous liquid comprising a dispersion of a protein substance of animal origin, e.g. milk, gelatine, a rubber dispersion, e.g. latex and starch, e.g. potato starch, then with a tanning bath comprising an organic acid and finally consolidating by pressure. The fibrous material may be cotton wool, cotton waste, wool, silk or artificial silk. Rubber includes gutta percha, balata and rubber derivatives such as chlorinated rubber. A preferred tanning bath comprises acetic acid, tartaric acid and borax, to which pigments may be added. The material may be dyed before or after treatment. A plurality of bats of treated material may be consolidated preferably in such a manner that the directions of successive layers of fibres are at right angles. According to the Provisional Specification the product may be coated with a cellulose varnish and impressed with a leather pattern.
