Abstract

535,076. Printing surfaces. CHAMBON CORPORATION. Oct. 5, 1939. No. 27269 Convention date, Oct. 12, 1938. [Class 100 (ii)] A thin flexible metal printing plate 2, Figs 2 and 5, is provided with bent ends 4, 4<SP>1</SP> having sharp edges which, when the plate is strained round a printing cylinder meet without forming any appreciable gap. These ends may be further bent to engage in slots, e.g. 26, 26<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, in the opposing jaw faces of the cylinder. The sharp edges may be former by first bedding the ends of the plates then pressing to displace the metal so that it forms projections 10, 10' and then, after securing the plate to the cylinder, removing the surplus metal by grinding &c. In another method of making the plates, ridges or creases are formed by means of dies across the plate at a distance apart equal to the circumference of the cylinder and the end portions beyond the creases are then bent to form the parts 4, 4'. The cylinder may comprise two sections 12 12<SP>1</SP> with bosses 14<SP>1</SP> engaging a shaft 13 and being movable to clamp or unclamp the plate by screws 17 rotatable in a rod carried by the section 12 and threaded into a rod 18 carried by the section 12<SP>1</SP>, the screws having wormwheel heads 19 engaged by worms 20 and shaft 21. The ends 4, 4<SP>1</SP> may be curved slightly longitudinally of the cylinder so that they are slightly convex towards each other and the jaw faces 22, 22' may also be curved so that one is slightly concave and the other convex so that the line between the sharp edges of the plate is curved to ensure smooth passage of a doctor when the plate is prepared for photogravure printing.
