Abstract

535,056. Plate heat-exchangers. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. Aug. 15. 1939, No. 23526. Convention date, Sept. 13, 1938. [Class 64 (iii)] A heat-exchanger 4 for use particularly in a gas turbine installation comprises a number of flat chambers 14 in a casing 13 so connected in the installation that excess air and combustion gases pass through the casing along the sides of the flat chambers to a combustion chamber 7 supplying a mixture of air and gases to a turbine 8 from which they flow after expansion through the flat chambers in the heat exchanger to an outlet 12. The chambers are formed of metal sheets bent over and welded at their edges 25. Internal struts 19 formed of metal strips welded alternately to opposite sides of a chamber resist the external pressure of the gaseous medium of higher pressure. The ends of the flat chambers pass through elongated slots in the end walls 17, 18 of the casing, packing being provided to seal the joints and allow expansion and contraction of the chambers. In a modification, one end of each chamber is secured to an end wall by a longitudinally flexible pipe resembling a bellows The casing may be formed of upper and lower sections with curved top and bottom.
