Abstract

1446750 Heat pipes applied to heat exchange between fluids PLESSEY CO Ltd 6 Nov 1974 [20 Dec 1973] 59159/73 Headings F4S and F4U [Also in Division F1] Heat transfer between gas-turbine exhaust gases and air is effected by an array of heat pipes 46 the respective ends of which are attached by welding to annular fins 13 and 47. Sodium is the heat transfer medium in each pipe 46, and each pipe also contains an annular wick of stainless steel wire wool. In use the sodium in the tubes is vaporized by the turbine exhaust gases in zone 45 the vapour passing along the pipes 46 to the zone 12 where it is condensed in heating the air stream flowing to the combustion chambers 6 from the compressor 10. Other media may be used in the heat pipes such as potassium, mercury, cesium and lithium.
