[Class 94 (i)] [Also in Group XXX] In apparatus of the type in which cigarettes or other rod-shaped articles are delivered in vertical rows from a hopper between a series of partitions, the lower portions of some of the partitions move relatively to and substantially in the plane of the partition to facilitate the orderly delivery of the articles on to a support beneath the partitions. As shown, a hopper 8 delivers cigarettes between partitions 10 to a reciprocating pusher 11 carried by a conveyer 12 and arranged to move three rows of cigarettes from between the partitions. The upper parts 14 of alternate partitions are pivoted at 15 and actuated by cams 18 on a shaft 19 as described in Specification 513,717. The outer partitions 16 terminate above lateral pressing members 44, 144, and the two central partitions extend into slots 13 in the pusher 11. The lower parts 50 of the intermediate partitions 10 are pivoted at 51 and actuated in timed relation with the pusher by a cam 56 on the shaft 19. As the pressers 44, 144 are moved inwards by a cam 38, the auxiliary partitions 50 are raised to clear the pressers and to allow the batch to be laterally compacted. To adapt the apparatus to the collation of three rows of 7, 7 and 6 cigarettes, the presser 144 is provided with a ledge 58 excluding one cigarette from the bottom row; a single cigarette may afterwards be allowed to drop from the middle row. The cigarettes in the hopper may be stirred by apparatus described in Specification 471,521.
