Abstract
534,528. Variable pitch airscrews. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., and WRIGHT, M. E. A. July 25, 1939, No. 21651. [Class 114] In order to correct slip stream conditions in the case of contra-rotating variable pitch airscrews driven by separate engines, where one engine is operating at a higher power than the other one an aerodynamic device is mounted in the slip stream and controls the relative pitch of the airscrew. The vane in the slip stream controls the three-way valve h, Fig. 5, the passages m, n in which may communicate the pressure ducts p, q with either of the passages p, s, the remaining passage being connected to exhaust t. The layout of the hydraulic circuit, shown in Fig. 7, shows the hydraulic leaks from the valve j to the forward and rear ends of the pitch adjusting mechanisms d, e as well as valves u, w by which the pitch may be manually controlled. In a modification, the variations of the slip stream established by a pitot tube 16, Fig. 10, are indicated by a differential pressure gauge 17. The valve 18 carrying the pitot tube carries a crank 30 connected to the valve j, which is manually operated to adjust the propeller pitch and the disposition of the pitot tube until the pressure gauge 17 is zeroized.
