Abstract

533,835. Coating bodies with glass or other fusible mineral substance. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. (Tokyo Electric Co., Ltd.). Dec. 4, 1939, No. 31422. [Class 56] [Also in Group XXXVI] A method of coating a body such as a wire with fusible mineral substance, particularly glass or quartz, consists in producing a fibrous form of the substance by squirting fused material with the aid of gas under pressure, and causing the fibres so produced to impinge on the body while they are still in a viscous state. Fibres having a thickness of less than six microns may be deposited on a wire to form a resilient, insulating coating. A glass rod 2 may be fed at a pre-determined rate through an electric heater R to a nozzle 1. Compressed air blown through the nozzle projects the glass in the form of a spray of fibres 3. A body, such as a wire 4, is progressively exposed to contact with the glass fibres and receives a coating 5 which may be heated by flames 6 to fuse its surface. Specification 28001/12, [Class 56], is referred to.
