[Class 40 (v)] In a radio-navigational system of the overlapping- beam type, the middle course is further narrowed in width by periodically' varying the directivity of the equi-signal area 8, Fig. 3, through a smaller angle #. The possible limits of deviation are thus reduced from the zig-zag course marked b to that marked a in Fig. 4. In a beacon transmitter in which only one beam is emitted at any instant, the desired effect is obtained by oscillating the aerial system mechanically through a small angle by means of an eccentric link and worm gearing. Alternatively the radiated beam may be periodically changed in direction by varying the phase of the high-frequency currents fed to it.
