Abstract

532,882. Purifying metal salt solutions. OCEAN SALTS (PRODUCTS). Ltd., and ADAMS, B. A. July 27, 1939, No. 21847. [Class 1 (iii)] [Also in Group I] In a process for purifying electrolyte solutions and preparing pure salts therefrom comprising contact of the solution with an organic ionexchange material, the activity of co-efficients of the electrolytes in the solution are previously adjusted so that either the ions constituting the impurity or the ions to be isolated are absorbed by the base-exchange material to the exclusion of the others. The adjustment may be made by diluting the solution or concentrating it by evaporation, by treating it chemically to remove some of the ions constituting the impurities, or by the addition of a concentrated solution or a solid containing the same ions as those to be isolated. Organic ion-exchange materials as described in Specifications 450,308 and 450,309 may be used. An example is described in which a solution containing sodium, magnesium and calcium ions is diluted and passed through a hydrogen-exchange material, the magnesium and calcium ions being absorbed so that a pure sodium salt can be prepared from the effluent. When, however, the solution is concentrated or a sodium salt added the magnesium and calcium ions are in the effluent and a pure sodium salt can be prepared from the exchange material. In another example, a solution containing magnesium and calcium ions is diluted and passed through material containing exchangeable magnesium ions, an effluent being obtained which contains only magnesium ions.
