In a rotary intaglio machine in which the printing cylinder extends into an ink housing the spaces between the ends of the cylinder and the end walls of the housing are closed by sealing members which abut against tne enas of the cylinder and allow of axial adjustment of the cylinder while maintaining the seal. Improved means are also provided for sealing the spaces between the cylinder and the side walls of the housing. As shown, an end sealing block 6, Figs. 1 and 3, slidably engaging a hood 8 fixed to the end wall 5 of the housing 2 is pressed against the end of the cylinder 1 by springs 9 which permit of axial movement of the cylinder. The block 6 is provided with an extension 10 of the same radius as the cylinder to form a bearing surface for the doctor blade 3 which is reciprocated longitudinally by any suitable mechanism. The blade 3 is clamped in a holder 12 carried by a plate 13 fixed to a pivot shaft 14 and the ends of the holder 12 and plate 13 extend into and in sealing engagement with a hood member 15, having inwardly directed flanged portions engaging the extension 10 and an end wall in sealing contact with a flange 18 on the end of the hood 8. The hoods 15 at the opposite ends of the cylinder are connected by a bar 16 partly embracing the shaft 14 and having a curved exterior surface engaged by a spring pressed sealing strip 19. The housing is sealed on the side opposite the doctor blade by a plate 22 adjustably secured to a plate mounted on end portions 24 of the hoods 8. To provide for a continuous bearing surface for the doctor blade when the printing cylinder is of the form having radiused ends R, Fig. 7, and tapered parts T, adaptor rings 27 shaped internally to fit the parts R, T and of cylindrical form externally are placed on the ends of the cylinder. The crevice at the inner edge of the ring 27 may be filled by a suitable composition F. Specifications 481,188 and 505,390 are referred to in the first Provisional Specification.
