Abstract
532,578. Projectiles. WELLCOME, H. Sept. 11, 1939, No. 25569. [Class 9 (i)] A "bolas" projectile particularly for use against aircraft, comprises a series of weights connected by wires which are twisted together, the cable thus formed being helically coiled within the shell. The weights may be separate elements fitted, preferably non-rotatably, in the shell, means being provided for increasing the rotational speed of the weights over that of the shell ; or, they may be constituted by sections of the shell casing itself. To prevent undue twisting of the wires as the weights rotate, swivel connections are provided. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the looped ends 7B of the series of wires 7 are connected to plugs 9K which are rotatable in the weights 9. The firing- charge 4 for discharging the bolas is separated from the latter by a plate 12 and segments 12B, these and the weights being formed with driving- lugs engaging bands on the interior of the shell 1 to give additive rotation of the " bolas" on discharge from the shell-casing. The bore of the latter diverges towards the head 3A where the wires are grouped by a clip 17 supported by a series of Z-shaped brackets 8H which are spread by centrifugal force to release the clip. Fig. 14 shows a modification in which the weights connected to the hubs of the wires 31 form segments 25 of the actual shell-casing connected by the base-cap 27 and nose 26, these parts being keyed together to prevent relative rotation. Fracture of the shell, to release the weights, is controlled by a time fuze 28 operating a powder charge 36. In all cases, the wires used may be of round, or streamlined section.
