[Class 83 (iv)] A machine for riveting perforated work 77, 78 has an upsetting die 91, with a resiliently mounted centre pin 102 for aligning the perforations, mounted to slide vertically in an adjustable work support 98 and a work clamp 76, with a rivet supply device and a punch 22 for driving a rivet through the perforations, backing it during upsetting, and, if desired, countersinking the plate 77. A hand operated valve 10, during its downward movement, first admits compressed air &c. from a pipe 3 and port 18 to a port 20 thereby moving down a piston 8 and a slide 5, rivet guideway 69, and clamp 76 connected thereto, the rivet 43 falling down the hole vacated by the punch 22 and into jaws 72. The valve then admits air to ports 37, 35 thereby moving a piston 32 to the left and, by means of a toggle 25, 26, forcing down the punch 22. The piston 32 uncovers ports 51, 96 thereby admitting air to a cylinder 48, Fig. 6, the piston of which operates a rivet pick-up 39 to supply rivets to a fixed guideway 41, and also admitting air, via a pipe 94, Fig. 5, to a cylinder 84 thereby moving a piston 83 to the left and, by means of a toggle 80, 81, forcing the die 91 and pin 102 up as shown to upset the rivet. When the valve 10 is returned to the position shown in Fig. 1 by its spring 17, the ports 20 and 37 are opened to exhaust at 12 and the pistons 8, 32 and 83 are returned by springs 9, 34, 97 so that an arm 58 on the guideway 69 strikes a lever 63 on a shaft 62 which it turns, against the action of a spring 65, Fig. 9, to withdraw its arm 64 and allow a spring 57 to move a slide 56. This slide has an inclined slot 66, Fig. 12, so that at each to-and-fro movement one rivet is allowed to pass down the guideway 41 and on to the guideway 69 which, in the normal position, aligns with it. The pick-up 39 and slide 56 can be operated by hand to feed a rivet to the guideway 69 before starting the operation of the machine.
